Cancellation & Refund

Cancelling a railway ticket and receiving a refund depends on the ticket type, booking channel, reservation status and the applicable Railway refund rules at the time of cancellation. This page provides general passenger guidance and avoids quoting changeable charges or time limits as permanent rules.

For an e-ticket booked through IRCTC, cancellation and refund requests should be handled through the official IRCTC system. The amount refundable, deductions and eligibility are determined by the applicable Railway rules.

How to Cancel an E-Ticket

  1. Sign in to the official IRCTC website or app used for the booking.
  2. Open the booked-ticket or booking-history section.
  3. Select the journey you want to cancel.
  4. Select the passenger or passengers to be cancelled, where partial cancellation is permitted.
  5. Review the cancellation details shown by the official system before confirming.
  6. Complete the cancellation and keep the cancellation confirmation for your records.

The refund, where eligible, is processed according to the applicable Railway rules and the payment method used for the booking.

What Can Affect Your Refund?

FactorWhy it matters
Ticket typeE-tickets, counter tickets and other booking types can follow different cancellation procedures.
Reservation statusConfirmed, RAC and waitlisted bookings may be treated differently under the applicable rules.
Time of cancellationApplicable deductions and refund eligibility can depend on when the cancellation or refund request is made.
Train statusA passenger cancellation is different from a situation where the train itself is cancelled or affected by a railway disruption.
Booking/payment channelThe route used for booking and payment can determine where cancellation and refund information is displayed and how the refund is credited.

Partial Cancellation

If a booking contains more than one passenger, cancellation may be possible for selected passengers when the booking system and applicable Railway rules allow it.

After a partial cancellation, check the revised booking or reservation details carefully and keep the updated travel document available for the passengers who are still travelling.

After Chart Preparation

Online cancellation may not remain available after the applicable reservation chart has been prepared. If the normal cancellation option is no longer available, do not assume that a refund is automatically due or automatically rejected.

Where the Railway rules provide a refund-claim route, the official IRCTC system may provide a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) facility. A TDR is a refund claim that is considered under the applicable Railway rules; filing one does not by itself guarantee a refund.

Use the official IRCTC instructions for the applicable situation and retain the ticket, journey details and any supporting information requested by the system.

If the Train Is Cancelled

A train cancellation by the Railways is different from a passenger choosing to cancel a ticket. Refund handling can follow a separate process under the applicable Railway rules.

If your train is officially shown as cancelled, first check the booking status and the latest instructions in the official IRCTC or Indian Railways system before taking further action.

Do not cancel a ticket merely because you have heard about a possible disruption from an unofficial source. Confirm the train status through an official railway source.

Before You Cancel

  • Confirm that you are cancelling the correct train and journey.
  • Check the passenger names and select only the passengers who should be cancelled.
  • Review the cancellation details displayed by the official booking system before confirming.
  • Save the cancellation confirmation, ticket details and transaction reference.
  • For a refund issue, use the official transaction or refund-status facility before raising a complaint.
  • Never rely on an unofficial message, social-media post or third-party claim about a refund entitlement without checking the current official rules.

Important Note

The general guidance on this page is intended only to help passengers understand the cancellation and refund process and must not be treated as a statement of entitlement to any particular refund amount.
